Having explored almost every nook and cranny of Hampstead Heath near where I live in the dog days of the November 2020 lockdown, I was ready for something a little further afield in December. So I repeated a few favourite sections of the Capital Ring, a trail which goes around Inner London. On the section from Richmond to Boston Manor, I noticed a sign announcing the start of the River Crane Walk. However, I soon found out that the sign was not at the exit of the River Crane into the Thames but ½ k upriver near Richmond Lock. The actual exit is near the south tip of Isleworth Ait and is inaccessible. Not to be put off by this, I decided to trace the course of the River Crane from here to its source, wherever that might be, thus providing me with a fresh, relatively safe exploration during the Christmas period when I expected Covid 19 to run riot (I am 75 so have to be careful).
